Titanium based oxide dispersion strengthened alloys – A New Frontier

Titanium alloys are very attractive because of their lightweight, high strength, excellent corrosion resistance. Titanium and its alloys possess tensile strengths from 30,000 psi to 200,000 psi (210-1380 MPa), which are equivalent to those strengths found in most of alloy steels. However, maximum service temperature of titanium alloys is mostly limited up to 600°C because of creep deformation. Oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) alloys are the most promising structural materials for next-generation high temperature systems because of their excellent resistance to high-temperature creep. However, manufacturing of titanium based ODS alloy is very difficult because creating a uniform distribution of finely spaced, insoluble particles has been almost impossible.

In present work, titanium based ODS alloys were developed using novel processing method. The developed ODS alloys exhibited very high strength compared with other conventional CP-Ti. Furthermore, finely dispersed oxide particles were observed throughout the microstructure.
